Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular rehabilitation is a functional therapy for balance disorders. The re-education strategy tends to reprogram the balance functions, starting from the identification of the pathological elements of this complex function, and then exploiting the elements that are still functioning in the system.

The goal of vestibular rehabilitation is not the anatomical healing of a disease, but the restoration of altered functions by exploiting the adaptive properties and learning skills of the CNS. For this reason, there is no rehabilitation protocol for a given pathology (e.g. Ménière’s disease, labyrinthitis, etc.) but ad-hoc protocols need to be applied for each particular balance dysfunction, hence for each patient.

Given the premises, it is easy to understand why a rehabilitation therapy is prescribed whenever a vertigo patient is struggling to adapt to his balance pathology, irrespective of the cause of the pathology itself.
