MOBILIZATION OF THE SPINAL COLUMN

The manipulation is a forced passive mobilization which tends to shift the elements of an articulation or of a set of joints beyond their usual range, up to the limit of their possible anatomical movement.

ORTHOPAEDIC MANOEUVRE

Therefore, in the case of the spine, when allowed and required by its conditions, the manipulation consists in the execution of various movements of rotation, lateroflexion, flexion or extension, either isolated or combined, on the chosen spinal segment. The manipulation is therefore a therapeutic medical operation; it is a precise “orthopaedic” manoeuvre, whose indications and contraindications must be previously defined by means of an anamnestic and objective, general and particular, examination of the patient.
